SATANKA FOOD & COMMUNITY INNOVATION HUB

What is a Food Hub?

A food hub is an alternative model to industrial food distribution that focuses on local systems, connecting small farmers and ranchers to local businesses and institutions. Across the nation, food hubs have been shown to increase access to healthier foods and strengthen local economies. Feeding Laramie Valley launched the Satanka Food and Community Innovation Hub in August of 2024 as part of our larger mission to help Wyoming achieve state-wide food sovereignty.

What Does the Satanka Food Hub Do?

The Satanka Food and Community Innovation Hub is the next bold step in creating a sustainable food system in Albany County. Already, Feeding Laramie Valley uses regional produce in their SHARES and Kids Out to Lunch programs. Satanka will help local farmers and ranchers connect with other reliable sources of income by supplying the needs of local restaurants and businesses, starting with a partnership between Ivinson Memorial Hospital and 9-H Ranch. Soon, the program will expand to include Sheila Bird Farms in the hospital partnership as well.

The Food Hub bridges gaps in large-scale food handling, transportation, and marketing needs to help local producers meet safety requirements and reach new markets. Plans are in progress for networking the Satanka Food Hub with others across the state to help create a sustainable fully local and regional food system, which will bolster the health of both individuals and local and state economies.
